Is No Exercise Worse than Obesity?

Over the next 7 days (16-22 October 2014) , I will be posting some tips on dieting issues on my Life Coach Tips Blog. This first one is about the relative merits of dieting and exercise if you are obese:

I recently heard an expert on the radio arguing that you are more at risk of a variety of serious illnesses if you are a 'healthy' weight but do not exercise than if you are obese but do exercise moderately. An article on the National Health Service website suggests that this view is not an isolated view, although others maintain that trying to get obesity levels down is the more important priority for health services. You can find the full NHS article at: No Exercise is 'Worse than Obesity'

If you exercise moderately and are a healthy weight that would seem to be the best but I would suggest that given the above, even if you are overweight it's well worth exercising moderately. Bear in mind that the recommended guidelines for weekly exercise to reap health benefits are not as difficult to achieve as you might think: For adults aged 19-64 the recommended level of exercise is: At least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate intensity aerobic activity such as cycling or fast walking every week or 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) of vigorous intensity areobic activity such as running or a game of singles tennis every week (plus in either case some activities during the week that use your muscles is recommended) [Source: NHS website 2014].
