The Art of Conversation

It may sound obvious but good converation involves a balance between listening and speaking. You can see this highlighted implicitly in 2 conversational techiques that were highlighted many years ago in Manuel Smith's best selling book When I Say No, I Feel Guilty:

1. Following up on free information - this is when you show that you are listening and interested in what someone else says by responding sensitively with interested comments or queries in response to informaton they give you in conversation about themselves or what they have been doing;

and

2. Self-disclosure - when you freely disclose something about yourself or what you have been doing in conversation.

If you don't know the person you are conversing with particularly well then the kind of following up of free information or disclosure about yourelf that is being discussed here is usually nothing too personal but acts as a kind of invitation or encouragement to continue the conversation. In effect you are oiling the wheels of conversation by using these techniques.

If you sometimes get anxious in conversation or doubt your social skills, as a start remember that conversation is a balance and try the above mentioned simple techniques.
